Regarding the Android 16 system, multiple sources indicate that it is progressing according to the scheduled timeline. Currently, the Android 16 Beta 3 update has locked down the API interfaces and application behaviors, allowing developers to publish their target applications to Google Play. This also signifies that Android 16 has entered the platform stability phase.
Let's take a look at the new features together~
Support for Auracast Broadcast Audio
It is reported that Android 16 Beta 3 has added support for Auracast broadcast audio for Pixel 9 devices, compatible with LE Audio hearing aids. This feature, based on the LE Audio standard, enables hearing aids and headphones to directly receive audio streams from public places such as airports, concert halls, and classrooms, enhancing audio accessibility.
Enhanced Outline Text Contrast
For users with low vision, Android 16 Beta 3 introduces the outline text feature, replacing high-contrast text. Outline Font is a typeface style characterized by a clear outline around letters or characters. This font is commonly used in design, advertising, and logo creation due to its ability to make text more prominent and visually impactful. Outline text draws a larger contrast area around the text, significantly improving readability. Developers can use the AccessibilityManager API to check or register listeners to ensure application compatibility with this feature.
New Local Network Protection (LNP) Feature Test Option in Android 16 Beta 3
In the future, applications will need to request specific permissions to access users' local network devices. Developers can enable LNP restrictions via adb commands to test application functionality and identify parts that rely on local network access. Meanwhile, Google is developing a new security feature for the Android system that can prevent users from changing certain sensitive settings during a call, including allowing apps to install other apps (i.e., sideloading) and granting accessibility permissions.
According to reports, although scammers may instruct victims to hang up, sideload an app, and then call back, this additional step introduces an obstacle that may disrupt the scammer's rhythm and raise the victim's suspicion. Crucially, when attempting to enable sideloading permissions, the system displays a dialog box warning. This warning might prompt some to reassess the caller's credibility, thereby avoiding victimization.
Introduction of a New Battery Health Feature in Android 16 Beta 3
Google has also introduced a new battery health feature in the Android 16 Beta 3 update, helping users compare current battery capacity loss and providing suggestions to extend battery life. According to Google, the new battery health feature will assess and quantify changes in battery capacity, visually displaying the battery's wear and tear to users. Users can clearly understand the gap between the battery's current state and its initial performance, thereby better managing charging behaviors.
Google has also provided detailed annotations to help users understand the concept of battery health and take scientific measures to extend battery life. Google had previously launched adaptive charging and an 80% charge limit for Pixel phones. The addition of the battery health feature signifies a further enhancement to Google's battery management toolkit.
For users or developers eager to try out these new features, Google has stated that they can register their Pixel devices through Google's Android Beta program and receive OTA update notifications. Users already participating in the test need not take any additional action and can simply wait for the update to be pushed.
